You have to also remember is how anti-virus programs update from time to time. They become bigger and take more and more RAM.
The Solution
You can not have the same memory and computer components you had four years ago and expect it to run programs as effectively today as it did in the past. What I recommend you should do is to check the amount of RAM that you have on your computer and see if an upgrade is possible. RAM is actually cheaper than you'd expect, and many stores carry it such as Radio Shack or Best Buy. Other great places to buy RAM include Amazon and Tiger Direct.
